Members of the Board of the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center approached Margaret’s Folly in March of 2008 inquiring about a redesign of their website. The theatre wasn’t open yet and the board didn’t have a specific opening date just yet. Margaret recommended that they launch a preliminary website with a blog about the project (and about the famous screen actress it was named after) in an effort to accomplish several things – to put the website in front of visitors before the theatre opened, to allow people to make donations to the project online and to establish the site in search engines such as Google and Yahoo! for both the theatre itself as well as for the search term “Katharine Hepburn.” The blog, updated almost daily by News Channel 8’s Ann Nyberg, was a huge success. The website/blog climbed quickly from almost complete obscurity to page 2 in Google in just a few short weeks. Once the blog was established, Margaret began work on the main site that launched on August 31, 2009 – one week prior to the theatre’s grand opening on Labor Day weekend. The new site boasts a web-based program that allows the Kate’s Executive Director, Chuck Still, to enter events that then populate onto the home page, the Events page and the Kids! page.
Margaret utilized Google Apps for an interface that allows people to sign up for The Kate’s mailing list that speaks to a Google Apps spreadsheet – at no cost to The Kate. Google Apps are free. The site allows for people to make ticket purchases, donations and the purchase of gift certificates online as well.
And the blog? It’s still going strong… but now the topics on the blog are all about the performances… the fabulous performances that citizens of Connecticut will enjoy for years to come now that this historic landmark has been renovated.
