The Audubon Shop
The Brief
The Audubon Shop contacted Margaret’s Folly to inquire about a responsive eCommerce website. The shop sells thousands of items – from big, high ticket items to small, inexpensive items – all related to birds and birding. The Connollys – Janet and Jerry – had a placeholder for their website while a friend attempted to design their online shop. But the project proved to be too much for their friend and they soon realized the wisdom in hiring a professional website designer. But price was a factor.
Our Approach
First, Margaret’s Folly gave The Audubon Shop a new logo. The brick-and-mortar shop has a wooden sign in its front yard with a hand-painted cardinal. But the Connollys – Janet and Jerry – wanted a cardinal that looked a bit closer to the real thing. We drew a cardinal in Adobe Illustrator, using Garamond Narrow in jet black for the type. We then built a new eCommerce website – saving the Connollys money by using only twelve of the numerous categories of products sold by The Audubon Shop. For each category, we only added one product. We then exported a spreadsheet and sent it to Janet Connolly. Janet then added the products… adding the cost, the description, the weight and dimensions, the product image, etc. – again, saving money in the process. As the online shop gains customers, the Connollys can add more product categories and more products. The site is easily edited and expandable. Margaret’s Folly also designed business cards, a rubber stamp and online gift certificates for The Audubon Shop.
The Result
We launched the new responsive eCommerce site in early summer 2015 and the Connollys are well on their way seeing a return on their investment. The website has increased their customer base from customers local to Madison, CT to new clients from across the US and in Canada. (They were recently contacted by a man in Germany!) The cohesive look and feel makes The Audubon Shop instantly recognizable.
